The Final Two
We are down to the final two delivery/pickup services for the season as we head into our plant growing season and the opening of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) on Saturday, May 4. The HLFM is the largest producer-only farmers market in Delaware. It is also fun and community oriented with the best produce around. We hope you join us there.
Here is our schedule for the final two:
- Saturday, April 6 — Yes! We will offer our service
- Saturday, April 13 — No service
- Saturday, April 20 — Final service for the season
We’ve been fortunate this “off-season” to have such a wonderful array of freshly harvested produce and other authentic food from local farmers & vendors. And this week is no exception — we are still fortunate.
In addition to the abundance of produce items Chesapeake Organic is known for (e.g. kale, leeks, collard greens, & spinach), this week they are adding carrots, red radishes, beet greens, and red cabbage.
Fresh Harvest Hydroponics and Totem Farms supply us with a delicious selection of mouth-watering microgreens. Hattie’s Garden is offering a new batch of freshly-harvested scallions.
Through AlaskaWild we have wonderful sustainably harvested salmon. It is such a treat to grab a nice piece of salmon from the freezer, thaw in cold water for about an hour and throw it in the oven for 8 or 10 minutes for a delicious meal that is so easy to make.
Rounding off what is available this week are mushrooms from Davidson’s, free-range chicken eggs from Twin Post, freshly prepared food from Patty’s Gourmet, artisan cheese from Chapel’s Creamery, the many flavors from Backyard Jams and Jellies, and herbal care products from Plant Wisdom Within.
Remember the deadline for ordering is Wednesday at noon. We advise you to place your order, especially if you are going to want produce, as soon as possible.
Six-Pack Plants
Hattie’s Garden has some early plant six-packs available through the order form for those of you who just can’t wait. We are busy growing and by the end April, we will be holding our first plant sales here at the Garden!
- Calypso Cilantro — contains multiple plants per cell for cutting fresh cilantro.
- “Wildfire Lettuce” mix — a beautiful mixture of red lettuces with vibrant greens, multiple plants per cell for cutting young lettuce mix.
- Bouquet Dill — contains multiple plants per cell for cutting fresh dill.
- Arugula — contains multiple plants per cell for cutting fresh arugula.
About Our Six-Packs
A word about our small six-packs plant plugs (starts). We plant several seeds in each “cell” of our six packs for cilantro, dill, arugula and mixed lettuce.
These small, extremely viable plants will take off for you in your garden and give you very nice harvests in a small space and can be harvested at a tender age AND allowed to regrow.
If you are unsure how to plant these, please ask us. Most of them can simply be put in nice fertile soil about five or six inches apart, or in pots a little more closely. Lettuce should get a bit more space (8-10″) unless you plan to harvest them small. This is how we plant them at Hattie’s Garden and they will give you a lot of bang for your buck.
Yours in the Garden,
