Spring Ahead
Spring is definitely ahead as we witness more daylight hours every day, see our little seedlings beginning to sprout, find bulbs coming up from the ground, and delight in the return of the birds.
Soon the weather will change and soils will warm. The growing season will be upon us! I always look forward to the opening of the earth and the beginning of new life.
As spring approaches we are happy to include a few more items in the way of produce and fresh herbs from Chesapeake Organic, including swiss chard, small savoy cabbage, and just a few bunches of leeks and scallions. Order early for the best selection of this week’s produce lineup.
And we know that kale has been on the menu for a long, cold winter, but after fixing it for dinner this week, I realized I may never have had nicer, sweeter kale! There is absolutely nothing like the flavor of kale that has survived the worst cold of the winter.
For those of you who have been enjoying Jenn’s Pies, they are back this week! We so enjoy this treat during the off-season and have never had better pot pies with such great organic ingredients. Even the crust is made with organic butter, garlic and organic flour…no Crisco here! Our friend Lorraine at Palate Bistro and Catering in Rehoboth enjoyed a ham pot pie recently and had this to say: “Jenn really has something going on with these pies”! Fine praise indeed.
For salad ingredients, Fresh Harvest is our winter go-to with delicious hydroponically grown lettuce and microgreens. If you haven’t tried duck eggs, you can get them, and microgreens from Black Hog Farmstead. Twin Post has both fresh chicken eggs and duck eggs.
Weekly harvested mushrooms from Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms don’t get any fresher.
For the best proteins around, try AlaskaWild seafood and Bohemia Lea beef, pork and chicken. For cheese, nothing suits like Chapel’s Country Creamery selection of cheddar cheese and more.
Don’t forget to order your honey from Baues’ Busy Bees, taken from the hive at the back of our property here at Hattie’s Garden. Backyard Jams & Jellies continues to be a staple of our larder and we hope of yours with literally dozens of different selections.
Last but not least, our newest vendor, Plant Wisdom Within, features herbal care products crafted by Joan Greeley, a Clinical Herbalist and Licensed Nutritionist.
We sincerely hope you enjoy what we have to offer and appreciate your business throughout the winter months.
Plant CSA
The deadline of March 1 for reserving your Plant CSA credits is coming fast. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to pre-buy vegetable, herb and flower plants for your garden in a CSA model and receive a 10% savings.
We thank those of you who have already signed up as the CSA model helps us to purchase needed inputs for the season.
Plant information is on the website.
Growing plants is our business and we are known for our healthy, vigorous seedlings. We take care to seed them in a timely manner that makes sense for Delaware’s seasons.
Plants are available six to eight weeks during the spring, and most plants are planted multiple times to provide you with a plant that is at an appropriate age; not stressed or root-bound. Our plants are ready to take off when you place them in the soil, will make better growth than most box-store plants and are healthier plants from the start.
Yours in the Garden,
