Because of the deluge of rain we’ve been experiencing, Hattie’s Garden will only be open this week on Thursday, October 6 from 10 to 2 for the sale of produce, meat, eggs, cheese, and fish. Please note that we have begun to reduce our afternoon hours to coincide with seasonal changes.

We will also be at the Fall Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) at Lewes Elementary School Parking Lot parking lot at 820 Savannah Rd. in Lewes on Saturday, also during a shortened timeframe from 9 to 12.

We continue to harvest excellent plump and juicy Provider Bush Green Beans. Also this week we have a beautiful harvest of young arugula for you.

We thought we might not be harvesting basil this late in the season, but it is still pumping out beautiful leaves. We will not cut bulk basil for you unless specifically requested. To keep it beautiful, fresh and turgid for you, basil must be cut early in the morning. Please get those emails out to Hattie and she will have it waiting for pickup. (Half pound provides about 10 cups of loosely packed leaves.) An easy way to preserve basil for winter use is to simple put it in the food processor with a bit of olive oil and then freeze it. Then you can take it out and use it for whatever you wish, including pesto. Many folks freeze in old fashioned ice cube trays, but you can just as easily freeze it in Tupperware or a loaf pan and carve a piece off whenever you need it.

The following freshly harvested produce and flowers is available at Hattie’s Garden on Thursday, October 6 from 10 to 2.

• Provider Beans — Excellent flavor and is one of the best for freezing and canning.
• Microgreens — Includes Arugula Microgreens, Radish Microgreens and Mixed Microgreens.
• Young Arugula — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Young lettuce mix — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Fresh Basil — Send an email ahead for large quantities so we can cut early and fresh for you.
• Jalapeño Peppers — America’s Favorite chile pepper is by far the jalapeño. It’s a bright green little guy that can be lovingly incorporated into just about anything, from soups to sauces.
• Shishito Peppers — These popular appetizer peppers are mostly a mild chili pepper, but every now and then a particular pod will pack some heat. Makes the perfect finger food when blistered.
• Hakurei Turnips — These sweet, mild white salad turnips are good raw or lightly cooked.

Directions to Hattie’s Garden

Hattie’s Garden is located at 31341 Kendale Rd in Lewes approximately 3 miles from Plantation Road (also known as Rt. 1D), coming inland on either Robinsonville Rd. or Beaver Dam Rd (Rt. 23 South).

Kendale Rd. is a short road (0.6 miles) between Robinsonville and Beaver Dam Road. The house is fifth on the left from Beaver Dam Rd, and has a large wooden fence in front of house with purple trim.

Park in the graveled area facing the fence. Produce and food is located inside the garage and you may enter through the side door. Just follow the signs.
