What’s New at Hattie’s Garden

This week we begin the harvest of our carrots. Our carrots are small, sweet and delicious. We should also have red beets and still plenty of Sashimi cucumbers. We continue to pray for rain and are fortunate to have enough well water to keep our garden wet enough to produce nice fall crops for you.

Remember to come in to use up your CSA credits. We are closing our doors at the garden on Thursday, November 21, with our last HLFM appearance on Saturday, November 23.

Where to go during the winter months

We are recommending Dittmar Family Farms, run by Zach and Jenny Dittmar, as an option to be used during the off-season months for locally produced food. You already may know them from the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM). The Dittmars have a regenerative operation, growing specialty fruits and vegetables and raising grass fed beef and lamb. Their primary crops include lettuce, arugula, salad mixes, carrots, beets and radishes. They utilize high tunnels to grow vegetables year-round.

Zach and Jenny will be making weekly deliveries in the Lewes and Rehoboth area throughout the winter. There will be a weekly newsletter via email with information on what is being harvested each week so that you can order for pickup in the Lewes area. The pickup location will likely be the Lewes Park and Ride (Next to Lowes). Check out their website and sign up with your email address to receive news and updates.

What’s Available from Hattie

The following freshly harvested produce will be available at the Garden on Tuesday, October 15, Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 17 from 10 to 2. We will also be at the HLFM on Saturday, October 19 from 9 to 12.

• Red Beets — Young bunches with greens.
• Young carrots — Slim early carrots are sweet and delicious.
• Young Siberian Kale — A tasty Russian variety with flat, blue-green leaves. We pick this variety young and tender to make it a versatile kale. Eat it raw in salads or smoothies, or lightly cook for even more flavor.
• Fresh Young Ginger — Mild and tender enough to eat raw in salads, it has an almost translucent skin that is so thin it doesn’t need peeling; you can practically rub it off. Just wash it and trim the cut surfaces.
• Young Arugula — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Swiss Chard — Tender young bunches. Cooks quickly and is delicious.
• Young Lettuce Mix — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Shashimi Cucumbers — Japanese type cucumber with small seed cavities and delightful sweetness.
• Green Tomatoes — There are just hundreds of ways green tomatoes can be used, including the popular fried green tomato. Simply slice your tomatoes, coat with flour, dip into an egg/milk mixture and then dredge them in a mixture of cornmeal, bread crumbs, salt and pepper. Fry in vegetable oil. Check out these 19 great recipes, for ideas like pickled green tomatoes, oven fried green tomato caprese, green tomato salsa, green tomato pie, green tomato pasta sauce and green tomato cobbler!
• Tomatoes — We have a few regular tomatoes and a few pints of cherry tomatoes.
• Chives — In bunches. Freshly cut.
• Lemongrass — Lemony, herbaceous, works well in sweet and savory dishes and drinks.
• Shishito Peppers — These popular appetizer peppers are mostly a mild chili pepper, with an occasional hotter pepper. Toss in oil and sear in the skillet, then sprinkle with flaky salt.
• Poblano Peppers — Sweet mildly-hot (also referred as Ancho’s when dried).
• Carmen Red Italian Frying Peppers — Sweet Italian pepper that are considered by some to be the best-tasting Italian frying pepper.
