What’s Available from Hattie

The following freshly harvested produce will be available at the Garden on Tuesday, May 30 and Thursday, June 1 from 10 to 4, and at the HLFM on Saturday, June 3. Beginning next week, will be open at the Garden only on Thursdays from 10 to 4, and you can find us at the HLFM Markets on Wednesday and Saturday.

• Provider Green Beans — Available on Thursday. Harvested when they’re young and tender, the ‘Provider’ variety is well flavored and delicious.
• Scallions — Beautiful freshly-harvested bunches.
• Mini Romaine Heads — Bronze-red and green heads bundled together for you.
• Chiogga Beets — Available on Thursday. When raw, these beets have a crunchy texture with a strong earthy flavor, and when cooked, they develop a tender and soft consistency with a sweet, earthy flavor.
• Young Carrots — Freshly harvested. Tender and delicious.
• Young Arugula — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Young Mixed Lettuce — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Mesclun — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Swiss Chard — Tender young bunches. Cooks quickly and is delicious.
• Dill — Freshly cut.
• Cilantro — Freshly cut.

Plants, Plants, Plants

Stop by the Garden on Tuesday, May 30 and Thursday, June 1 from 10 to 4 to choose from an absolutely beautiful selection of plant starts for your home gardens. While we will bring plants to the HLFM on Saturday, our space is limited and your largest selection will always be at the Garden.

For those of you just getting started in your gardens, we have a lovely batch of tomato plants, eggplants and pepper plants waiting to get into the ground.

Tomatoes

Our tomatoes are ready. You can choose three heirloom tomato plants: Pineapple Bicolor, Cherokee Purple and Pink Brandywine. We have the dwarf Czech’s Bush and three great red hybrids that will produce tons of tomatoes for you: Big Beef, Celebrity and Early Girl.

In the cherry tomato class, pick out a nice Lucia Grape, a delicious Tommy Toe (a great flavored large red heirloom cherry), our reliable SuperSweet 100, heirloom Black Cherry, popular SunGold, or its cousin the larger, very good producer known as SunPeach.

For paste tomatoes, you can’t go wrong with San Marzano or the larger wonderful heirloom Amish Paste.

Eggplant

Our eggplant selections include two Asian, Orient Express (for the ground or a container) and the larger delicious Asian Charm. For Italian eggplant choose from the standard and very good produce, Galine, or the delicious heirloom Rosa Bianca.

Peppers

Our peppers are too numerous to detail, but we carry productive varieties for you of bell peppers, other sweet peppers, both thin-walled and sweet thick-walled salad peppers. Hot peppers in order of hottest to less hot are Habanero, Cayenne, Jalapeno, Poblano and plenty of delicious Shishito.

Other Vegetable Plants

Of course we’ve still have a nice selection of other vegetable plants. These are cucumbers, squash and small six packs of mixed lettuce you can even grow in a container for repeated cuttings of salad ingredients.

Herbs

We have a lot of herbs to choose from. The basil is here as well. We love our African Blue Basil and we have a couple varieties of Basil Downy Mildew resistant Genovese (sweet basil) types.

Flowers

For flowers, we specialize in cutting varieties including Pumila Mix (aka Cut ‘n Come again), huge Benary Giant cutting zinnias, a couple kinds of Celosia plumed varieties, the very popular Gomphrena and the stunning tall and beautiful Cosmos Double-click.

You’ll also find plenty of French marigolds, both the Lemondrop Extra Dwarf and the beautiful Brocade Dwarf.

For a beautiful edible flower, try our Jewel Nasturtium if you have some afternoon shade.

Remember we use only the best organic soil available to grow our plants. We get our soil from Vermont Compost Company and have found no better biologically active, compost-based soil anywhere. Your plants will thrive because they have already developed a sophisticated root system, only possible through the exchanges facilitated by the growth of beneficial bacteria and fungi enabled by this carefully crafted compost based soil.

Directions to Hattie’s Garden

Hattie’s Garden is located at 31341 Kendale Rd in Lewes approximately 3 miles from Plantation Road (also known as Rt. 1D), coming inland on either Robinsonville Rd. or Beaver Dam Rd (Rt. 23 South).

Kendale Rd. is a short road (0.6 miles) between Robinsonville and Beaver Dam Road. The house is fifth on the left from Beaver Dam Rd, and has a large wooden fence in front of house with purple trim.

Park in the graveled area facing the fence. If you don’t see us, you may toot your horn. We could be processing things in the garage or working outside in the garden.

Reminder that you do not need an appointment. Simply show up during our open hours of operation. We prefer cash or checks, but do have the capability to take credit cards if necessary.
