Hattie’s Garden is open on Wednesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 9 from 10 to 4 for the sale of produce, meat, eggs, cheese, fish and plants for your home gardens.

We will also be at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) located at the George H.P. Smith Park on Saturday from 8 to 12.

What’s Available from Hattie

The following freshly harvested produce is available at Hattie’s Garden on Wednesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 9 from 10 to 4.

• Hakurei Turnips — These sweet, mild white salad turnips are good raw or lightly cooked.
• Swiss Chard — Delightfully tender. By the bunch.
• Red Radishes — By the bunch.
• Sugar Snap Peas — Get them while they last.
• Young Arugula — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Young Mixed Lettuce — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Mesclun — Triple-washed and bagged.
• Fresh Herbs — Italian Parsley, Cilantro and Dill.

Plants for your Home Gardens

Hattie’s Garden is happy to be offering a new batch of tomato plants for you this week. There are fourteen varieties to choose from, including, hybrid, heirloom, paste, cherry and grape tomatoes. We have nice big pepper and eggplant plants too. It’s OK to plant tomato plants, eggplants and peppers until the end of the month, so if you feel you are getting a late start, we want you to know there is still plenty of time.

For flowers, we have a beautiful batch of Cut ‘n Come Again Zinnias in mixed colors that will grow to about two feet without needing support. A new planting of Benary Giant cutting zinnias, also in mixed colors, is ready for your garden as well, if you dare! They will grow to at least four feet tall with huge blooms of 3-4″, but will need a bit of support, or need to be planted against a fence or wall with plenty of sun. We have Zahara and Profusion Bedding Zinnias in mixed colors ready for a carefree landscaping feature for you. They will bloom all summer, fill in incredibly well with spacing of a foot apart and grow to approximately a foot to a foot and a half tall. They are just stunning, heat tolerant, drought tolerant and disease tolerant. We also have tall (3-4′) Double-Click Cosmos (cranberry and mixed) ready for you. And of course we have easy to grow marigolds in the taller dwarf Brocade mix and the shorter extra dwarf Lemondrop. And don’t forget to get a 4-pack of Nasturtium, or a 10″ Nasturtium pot for your deck.

We still have many herbs to choose from. You might like to try our Vietnamese Coriander. It is a great substitute during the summer when the heat makes it impossible to grow regular cilantro. Vietnamese Coriander is actually Persicaria odorata. It has a wonderful spicy flavor with hints of cilantro. It is used in Southeast Asian cooking and in India. This nutrient dense herb, full of flavonoids, is often eaten fresh in salads, Vietnamese Coriander is also used in soups, stews and summer rolls. It likes partial shade and to stay in moist soil. It can make a nice ground cover under trees and is a perennial in Zone 9, so don’t expect it to overwinter in your garden, but you may dig it up and keep indoors as a house plant for the winter. We also have a very pretty variegated Pineapple Mint and plenty of nice Greek Oregano, English Thyme, Berggarten sage and more.

Please note that while we will bring as many plants as possible to the HLFM, our space is limited. The best selection will always be at the garden during our open hours.

Directions to Hattie’s Garden

Hattie’s Garden is located at 31341 Kendale Rd in Lewes approximately 3 miles from Plantation Road (also known as Rt. 1D), coming inland on either Robinsonville Rd. or Beaver Dam Rd (Rt. 23 South).

Kendale Rd. is a short road (0.6 miles) between Robinsonville and Beaver Dam Road. The house is fifth on the left from Beaver Dam Rd, and has a large wooden fence in front of house with purple trim.

Park in the graveled area facing the fence. The plants will be setup at the end of the driveway and we should be close by. Produce and food is located inside the garage and you may enter through the side door. Just follow the signs.
