Plants for your Garden
Yes, we have plants for your garden.
With all the rain, cold and wind, it has been hard to get the warm weather vegetables and annual flowers and herbs planted. But it looks like we are now in the clear and the weather has finally turned warm.
We think this week things are finally settling into a more seasonal pattern and invite you to pick out plants all week here at Hattie’s Garden.
This week we will be open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 to 5 and will be at the HLFM on Saturday from 8 to 12.
Tender Herbs
Most of our tender herbs (also known as warm weather) are ready for you to be planted in the ground.
Of interest this year is a new herb for us, Vietnamese Cilantro (Polygonum odoratum). Also known as Rau Ram, this mysterious and exotic herb is a pretty little plant in the knotweed family. It is often used interchangeably with Cilantro in Vietnam and is used in many different ways throughout the world. It is generally used raw, like cilantro. Grow this plant with afternoon shade or with all day filtered shade and plenty of water. Cut it back often to enjoy the younger leaves.
Another herb we just love is Pineapple Sage. This is a beautiful large plant that will grow to 4 or 5 feet by the end of the summer and burst into red blossoms for the fall. It attracts literally 1000’s of pollinators, including hummingbirds and can also be cut and used in flower bouquets. Although a perennial, it is normally not hardy enough in this zone to overwinter. Nevertheless, it is very easy to grow from one of our plants.
And we can supply you with a plant to grow your own Stevia for a sweetener. Stevia leaves can be dried or used fresh. This plant is also a perennial, but will not overwinter here. Nevertheless, one plant can give you all the stevia you would ever need for a year’s worth of sweetener.
Additionally, we have more than a dozen herb varieties for your home garden including 12″ long oval herb planters containing beautiful Chives, nice Flat Italian Parsley known as ‘Giant of Italy, English Thyme or Lemon Thyme, culinary tri-colored sage and flavorful Greek Oregano or marjoram.
We also have a wonderful selection of black, purple, pink, red, yellow, orange, striped, big, little, and medium sized heirloom tomato plants.
We will tell you all about them when you stop by, as well as about all of our other wonderful plants, including cutting flowers and bedding flowers, cherry tomatoes, hot and sweet peppers, Asian and Italian eggplant, squash and cucumbers.
