Mother’s Day Week Open House & Tours
Mother’s Day Week Open House and Tours of the Garden and Greenhouse Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday
Happy Mother’s Day week! In honor of Mother’s Day this week and of the advent of the growing season, we are opening the Garden and the Greenhouse Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 to 5 each day and we will have a special opening Sunday, Mother’s Day, from 11 to 3 for those of you who can’t make it during the week. We are located at 31341 Kendale Rd in Lewes
In addition, we are at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) on Saturday from 8 to 12 located on the grounds of the George H.P. Smith Park located at the corner of Dupont and Johnson Avenues.
Bring your mother, your grandmother, your friends, your friends’ mothers, your sons and daughters or anyone you like!
We have worked hard since February filling the greenhouse with plants and we are absolutely loaded this week. It is a sight to behold and we invite you to come take a look. Hattie will give tours of the Garden and the greenhouse and will be offering advise on all of your plant and planting questions. We will also demonstrate various garden tools and techniques for those interested.
Herb Planters
Especially nice for a Mother’s Day gift are our herb planters. This cute oval planter is stuffed with beautiful Chives, nice Flat Italian Parsley known as ‘Giant of Italy, English Thyme or Lemon Thyme, culinary tri-colored sage and flavorful Greek Oregano or marjoram.
These herb planters are just 12″ long ovals and can be brought into the kitchen for use while cooking. Though it may seem like a lot of herbs in one planter, the herbs simply adapt to the size of the container they are in.
Each herb has a small identifying label. They will last the summer and into the fall when you may want to replant these perennials outside in your garden where they will overwinter nicely for you.
Flowers for you or your Mom’s garden
We have four zinnia varieties to choose from in all heights. The bedding Profusion Zinnias get just 12-15″ tall, don’t need to be dead-headed and are drought and heat tolerant. The heirloom Cut ‘n Come Again Zinnia is a nice zinnia for those who want an old fashioned manageable zinnia cutting flower at just a couple feet tall. The Oklahoma Zinnia is also beautiful in Mixed Colors or Salmon and reaches about 3 feet.
Finally, for the adventurous we have Benary Giants, the cutting zinnia of professionals. This Giant is about 4 feet tall and will provide lots of 4″ wide double blooms in all colors of the rainbow as well as a mixed selection.
French Marigolds are very popular for annual gardens of all types and we have several varieties available. The diminutive Lemondrop is a true yellow extra dwarf reaching just 8″ tall, but spreading nicely. Brocade is a beautiful mix of rust, yellow, orange and bi-color marigold and Queen Sophia is of similar stature and colors, edged in gold. Both reach at least a foot in height in our zone. For a tall French marigold, you will love the open pollinated Court Jester, in bright strips of burgundy and yellow.
Our other flowers are relatively tall for cutting and include drought tolerant Gomphrena, (also called Globe Amaranth) available in purple or mixes of white, pink and purple; Cupcake Cosmos, Double Click Cosmos and more.
