Mother’s Day Ahead
Produce and Plants for Sale on Tuesday through Friday: 2 to 5, and Sunday (Mother’s Day): 11 to 3
Mother’s Day is just upon us and Hattie’s Garden is happy to provide healthy plants to honor those special people in your life.
We have beautiful herb planters containing lovely Berggarten Sage, beautiful Chives, lemony Lemon Thyme, essential Greek Oregano and a nice Flat Italian Parsley known as ‘Giant of Italy.”
These herb planters are just 12″ long ovals and can be brought into the kitchen for use while cooking. Though it may seem like a lot of herbs in one planter, the herbs simply adapt to the size of the container they are in. There are enough nutrients in the planter to last for the season. When fall arrives, you can plant the herbs outside, or overwinter and re-pot them next spring.
For the gardening mom, we also have lots of flowers, individual herbs, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and other vegetable plants available this week. These can make some nice gift items.
Stop by Hattie’s Garden this week anytime between 2 to 5 on Tuesday through Friday, and anytime between 11 to 3 on Mother’s Day Sunday. And of course, we will be at the HLFM on Saturday from 8 to 12.
Produce this Week
For your salad bowls, Hattie’s Garden will be harvesting various heirloom Lettuce Heads, triple-washed/bagged Mixed Lettuce cuttings, triple-washed/bagged Loose Leaf Lettuce and triple-washed/bagged Mesclun. We will also be harvesting fresh-cut Spinach.
Please look in the blue coolers for our triple-washed greens. Our salad mixes last a long time because of the care we take in harvesting and preparing them for you and then keeping them nice and cool.
Our fresh-cut herbs this week are Cilantro, Dill, Lemon Thyme, English Thyme and Oregano.
Plants this Week
This is the time of year for starting your gardens! Hattie’s Garden sells dozens of different varieties of all kinds of plants for your garden. Mostly annuals, they range from vegetables to flowers to herbs and are all “organically” grown. No treated seed is used and much of the seed is organic seed when available. And of course, the compost-rich potting soil we use, shipped to us from Vermont Compost Company, is the very best.
Tomatoes, Peppers and Eggplant Plants
We will have a full range of organically grown hybrid, heirloom, paste and cherry tomatoes, Asian & Italian-style eggplant and variety of sweet, hot and bell pepper plants.
Other Vegetable Plants
Wonderful summer squash includes Sunburst Patty Pan, Saffron Yellow Squash and Black Zucchini, which is not really black, but rather dark green.
We also have cucumbers — the old standby for slicing Marketmore Cucumber, and the delightful pickling (or eating) Little-leaf Cucumber.
Other vegetable plants include two varieties of Swiss Chard: delicious Fordhook and stunning Bright Lights.
Herb Plants
Our herbs are really beginning to take off and there are many varieties to choose from. We will have lots more herbs are coming throughout the month of May and all of the basil varieties will be ready toward the end of the month and continue to be available throughout June. It loves the warmest weather!
Flower Plants
Flowers include French Marigolds that are great for cheering up any garden, a variety of zinnias in mixed or individual colors, impressive Cosmos, and edible Jewel Mix Nasturtiums in large pots for your deck or small trays for the garden.
We will, of course, have more flower varieties available for you throughout May.
The flower plants we sell are not blooming in their pots! We don’t want them to bloom in their pots. We want them to bloom in your garden and grow to their full potential. They are at the stage now where they will literally “take off” once planted. They are not root-bound and the root hairs are just waiting to explore your soil.
Yours in the Garden and Market,
