Meteorological Spring
Meteorological spring began in the in the northern hemisphere on March 1. Though the official start to astronomical spring this year is not until March 20, (with the onset of the vernal equinox at 6:29 a.m. EDT), meteorologists break down the seasons into groups of three months, based on the annual temperature cycle around the globe.
Meteorological spring runs from March 1 to May 31 every year, whereas the vernal equinox (astronomical spring) can occur on either March 20 or 21.
What does that mean for us? Well, some days can be quite warm and lovely, as evidenced last Wednesday, and others can still be blustery and cold with snow in the forecast. But we have already seen signs of growth and renewal of new life as the crocuses and other bulbs are popping out, as well as the birds chirping in the morning and early evening.
Pickup / Delivery Service
We are pleased to announce our delivery / pickup service resumes for this Saturday, March 11. On sale this week are both Swiss Chard and Red Radishes for a $1 off on each! Thanks to the warmer than normal weather, Chesapeake Organic has plenty of produce and this week they are running a sale on their Swiss Chard and Red Radishes!
And don’t forget to order your eggs, mushrooms, cheese, meat, honey, jelly and jam, fish, and freshly-prepared gourmet food items. We are happy to have plenty of great food available for you this week from all of our vendors.
Final Two Pickup / Delivery Service
We plan to operate our service for Saturday, March 11 and Saturday, March 18 and then stop for the season as we become more and more busy here at Hattie’s Garden. We hope you take the opportunity to stock up on meat, seafood, cheese, jelly, and more. We are excited as always as we look forward to a new growing season.
Plant CSA Thanks
Thank you all who are participating in our Plant CSA. We are grateful for the extra boost this gives us to get going in the spring and look forward to providing you with beautiful plants for your home gardens.
Although the Plant CSA is closed now for new members, there will be plenty of plants for sale for everyone at Hattie’s Garden beginning in mid-April. Lettuce plants may be ready even sooner. We will keep you posted.
You will receive an email detailing what, when and where as we move forward. In the meantime, you can review our Plant section on the website so you can begin your planning. We will be updating some of the offerings for 2017, but most of the plants listed for 2016 will be available for this year.
Yours, planning the spring garden,
