Memorial Day Weekend Plant Sales
Memorial Day weekend is upon us. Known as a traditional planting weekend for many, consider avoiding the crowds and traffic by going to Hattie’s Garden Plant Sale this Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. We have an absolute abundance of plants that you will love. And our basil is finally ready! Hattie’s Garden is moving into the “summer” season quickly as the weather warms.
If you are a CSA Plant member and still have credits, please come to the early to sale if you wish. For any customer, if there are specific plants you want, you can contact Hattie if you would like them set aside for you. You may also make other arrangements to pickup plants if you email Hattie.
Available Plants
We do bring as many plants as possible to the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM), but you will find a more comprehensive selection at the Garden on Thursday and Friday, as well as less “traffic”, and because we have extra hands “on deck”, Hattie will be available to answer your questions and give advice.
Herbs
All of our herbs are available, but in particular our basil is finally ready this week! We have several Genovese-type basils, including the high-yielding Dolly Basil, authentic Italian Large Leaf Basil, and two new varieties for us: Red Rubin Basil and Eritrean Basil.
Peppers
All our hot peppers, sweet bell peppers and other sweet peppers are ready to be planted with the exception of Habeneros, which will be ready next week.
Tomatoes
Have we mentioned we have over 30 varieties of very healthy and vigorous tomato plants ready for you? This includes eight varieties that are well-suited to container growing. For more information on tomatoes such as the differences between heirloom & hybrid, categories (e.g. heirloom, hybrid, paste, cherry), open v. closed pollinated, growing tomatoes in containers, how often to water your growing tomatoes and more, please see our FAQ Section on Tomatoes.
Other Vegetables
This includes Asian & Italian Eggplants, Summer Squash, Cucumbers & Lettuce plants.
Flowers
There are plenty of Marigolds from four feet to 8″ tall. All are open-pollinated and should do a good job putting off a rather offensive odor for troublesome insects!
Our Zinnias also range in size and a new batch of the popular Benary Giant Zinnias is ready for you.
Available Produce
When you come for your plants, don’t forget to pickup some fresh salad ingredients. We are harvesting a beautiful new bed of young arugula and nice crisp lettuce, both head lettuce and triple-washed loose leaf lettuce. We have gorgeous cilantro, delicious parsley and tangy dill, as well as wonderful “mojito” mint. There are also more hakurei turnips this week.
We will have these also available at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Yours in the garden & the market,
