March Comes in Like a Lion
March “comes in like a lion, out like a lamb.” That’s our piece of folk wisdom for this month. We love folk wisdom. It is often something generally observable as true with no real proof of where the saying came from, and yet with amazing staying power.
The month of March is often greeted with this phrase and seems to be accurate for us this year.
While we had some mild weather in February, these first days of March have brought us a cold, windy, rainy start with temperatures forecast to remain quite cold, especially at night, for the next week or so.
You can also look to the night sky for another explanation for this proverb. At the start of March, the constellation Leo (the Lion) is on the eastern horizon at sunset. By the end of the month, Aries (the Ram) is on the western horizon.
Nevertheless, Chesapeake Organic is now able to offer us an abundance of some items that have been limited the past couple of weeks. We will have plenty of Red Russian kale, Curly kale, Swiss chard, collard greens, upland cress, napa cabbage, radishes and leeks. Fresh Harvest is our winter go-to with delicious hydroponically grown lettuce and microgreens. As usual, order early for the best selection of this week’s produce lineup.
Jenn has returned to bake delicious pies this week and we certainly have missed her. In addition, Patty is back from vacation and all of our other vendors continue to supply us with great items.
We are still receiving wonderful food from all of our other vendors and hope you take advantage of this service. This includes artisan cheese, farm-fresh chicken & duck eggs, free-range meat, seafood, jams n’ jellies, fresh mushrooms, and herbal remedies beginning today for our next service on Saturday, March 10.
All deliveries to Rehoboth and Lewes are still only $5.00.
Looking Ahead
We will be offering a gardening class later this month. The publication of the class dates and the opportunity to sign up will go out this week.
If you are already a gardener, you will come away with plenty of new information and knowledge. If you have never tried to grow vegetables or flowers, and would like to give it a try, join us and learn. Each student will receive customized instruction directly applicable to their own gardening projects.
For more general information, please see our Gardening Class page.
Finally, don’t forget to sign up for your CSA Plant credits. The new deadline is March 15, and payment of your CSA by that date secures your credits at a 10% discount.
Full information is on our website.
We are already growing and can’t wait to start planting outside.
Yours, planning the spring garden,
