Organic Gardening Class
Our first gardening class is underway beginning today! We also have a class starting Monday, April 1 as well. We still have a few spaces left. Below are the dates.
- Monday Class: April 1 and April 15 from 1 – 4 PM
Sign up now if you’d like to participate in a high-quality, informative gardening class. You will leave this class with good useable information and a look under the hood at some fascinating soil science.
I cannot overstate the importance of what we are now learning about microbes and how they contribute to the nutrient profile of our vegetables and ultimately to the health of our own microbiomes and health. All of this helps us understand why we garden “organically” or “sustainably” or use “regenerative” methods. We will talk about what all those terms are meant to convey.
The class is also highly practical and hands on to show you exactly how to grow your own nutrient dense vegetables and of course the all important reasons to also include herbs and flowers in your garden. Participation in the class includes season-long email correspondence with Hattie to help you over any hurdles.
Sign Up for the Monday class if you would like to participate. For more information on what the class is about, please see our Gardening Class page.
What’s Available This Week
The following items are available now to order for pickup or delivery on Saturday, March 30. You can stop by on Tuesday from 12 to 3 and Saturday from 9 to 2 for most everything, though placing an online order will ensure it will be available for Saturday pickup or delivery.
Hattie’s Garden has a nice selection of healthy microgreens for you this week. We will also have young Siberian kale and chives available.
On Saturday, at the Garden only, we will have a limited amount of Flying Squirrel Garden fruit pies and savory pot pies.
The planting season has also begun and this week you can order or pickup Mixed Lettuce plant starts in small six-packs. More will be available in the coming weeks. For more information on our plant starts, see our plant section pages on the website.
Due to customer requests, we now carry a nice selection of fresh organic dried beans and organic raw nuts. The organic beans we carry are adzuki beans, French green lentils, red decorticated lentils, kidney beans, cannellini beans, pinto beans, garbanzo beans, navy pea beans, green split peas and hearty bean soup. The organic raw nuts include walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and roasted (not raw!) unsalted peanuts.
Davidson Exotics brings us freshly grown organic certified mushrooms each week. We carry Cremini, Portabella, Shiitake, Maiitake, Grey Oyster, Lion’s Mane and King Oyster mushrooms to the list. In addition, we carry their mushroom umami and wild mushroom umami seasonings with or without salt, their mushroom salts, dried mushroom wild rice soups, instant organic free trade coffee with a blend of dried mushrooms, and a big selection of mushrooms powders. The mushroom powders are made from 100% fruiting bodies containing absolutely no filler. All products are certified organic.
Enoch Farms has sustainably raised, naturally grown, heritage pork. They provide us with a nice assortment of products, including plenty of specialty sausages, scrapple and porkchops.
Dittmar Family Farms supplies us with plenty of full-sized sweet carrots and their free-range Belted Galloway beef! Dittmar’s grass-fed beef is tender, juicy and flavorful. Often called “Belties,” this exquisite artisan beef is unlike any conventionally raised beef you will find in the supermarket. Known for a much leaner, yet nicely marbled meat, the Belted Galloway averages 46% lower in calories, 70% lower in fat and saturated fat, 57% lower in cholesterol and 19% higher in protein than comparable beef breeds, including Angus. This heritage beef breed dates back over 1,000 years. Get the premium steaks, roasts and other beef cuts while you can, as it is limited in quantity.
AlaskaWild provides us with some of the best wild fish available, directly from a family business based in Clam Gulch, Alaska. We carry whatever is in season and at present have salmon in the following varieties: Coho, Sockeye, Smoked Cajun and of course, traditional. We also have both Alaska Cod and Alaska Rockfish back in stock for you. This fish is flash-frozen and gets rave reviews from our customers.
Beachdog Farm has pasture-raised, organic non-GMO fed Sussex chicken eggs available, as well as their pasture-raised, non-GMO fed duck eggs. Duck eggs tend to contain even higher amounts of some nutrients than chicken eggs, including folate, iron, and vitamin B12. And for a short time, you can get their fresh turkey eggs! This seasonal delight is almost never seen on the market. They are creamy, like duck eggs, and taste the same as chicken eggs, but are larger in size. And yes, they are delicious! Limited supply.
From Twin Posts, we have wonderful free-range chicken eggs.
Chapel’s Country Creamery brings us incredible homemade artisan cheese, handcrafted using milk that comes directly from their pastured, grass-fed dairy cows. We carry their Chapel Cheddar, Otterly Pale Cheddar, Bay Blue, Brie, Woodbine, Smooth Sails, Queso Fresco and Paneer.
From Chrissy Bee’s, a division of Stag Run Farm, we have Dutch clover and wildflower raw honey and raw honeycomb.
Backyard Jams & Jellies has many choices this year. If you are looking for some great jams, chutneys, or jellies for the holiday season, please take a look at the selections we have. For more choices, stop by the Garden on Tuesday or Saturday.
Remember the deadline for placing your March 23 order is Tuesday at 8PM. Otherwise, please stop by the Garden on Tuesday from 12 to 3 and Saturday from 9 to 2 for casual shopping.
