Please place your order as soon as possible. We are having great success with our refined and improved process, and are able to keep it running much longer than before. However, when we do reach capacity, we will have to close it down for the week.
About Garlic Scapes
Garlic scapes are the tender stem and flower bud of a hardneck garlic plant. They are formed when the garlic plants begins to flower. We remove them as it allows the garlic bulb to grow larger.
Delicious and much coveted item of chefs everywhere, garlic scapes are sold by the bunch. Our scapes are ready to harvest and we are excited as this happens only for a short period of time each year. A fresh garlic scape is a true delight to use in the kitchen. We will have plenty of them this week and then less for another week or so. We hope you enjoy them while they last.
Garlic scapes can be used in stir fry, sauteed like green beans, steamed with lemon as a side dish and chopped into any salsa or dip. They can also simply be used wherever you would use regular garlic.
Heirloom Lettuce Heads
Another ephemeral vegetable for us are our delicious lettuce heads. We grow several heirloom lettuce varieties and harvest mostly in early June. After that it is too hot to successfully grow nice sweet lettuce heads to a reasonable size.
We are offering a package of them as we are never sure which types will do well for us and what will be available. With two types of romaine, two types of loose leaf and two types of butterhead, we know we will have one of each that we put into a package for you.
If you just want a single head, you may stop by the garden this week during our hours of operation listed below. Also stop by the garden for our Early Wonder Tall Top beets as we simply will not have sufficient number for the Saturday service.
New Seasonal Hours at the Garden
In addition to our pickup/delivery service on Saturday, Hattie’s Garden will be open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 5 PM. We will be keeping these consistent hours during the remainder of the growing season at the Garden.
Look for an email on Monday listing the varieties of produce, cut flowers and plants available during these hours. During this time, you will also be able to pickup many items also available through the delivery/pickup service such as Chapel’s cheese, Twin Post eggs, Chrissy’s Bees honey and AlaskaWild fish.
Yours in the Garden,
