What’s Available through the Online Order System
The following items are available now to order for pickup or delivery on Saturday, July 31.
Hattie’s Garden has begun the harvest of our heirloom tomatoes! We are growing Pineapple Bicolor, Cherokee Purple and Brandywine. These are excellent heirloom varieties and are picked to give you the very best flavor — just before they are quite ripe.
Did you know the most flavor is retained by picking tomatoes prior to them getting completely ripe? Once they are ripe on the vine, they are losing flavor and sweetness. You may order them through the order form, but visiting the Garden, or visiting us at the Wednesday HLFM market at Crooked Hammock, is a great way to pick out what you want.
We are also beginning the harvest of our cherry tomatoes and are preparing mixed pints of black and red cherries for you. We anticipate very good harvests of all our tomato varieties this year and appreciate your patience waiting for them! They could be just a little limited this week, but they look like they are on the verge of prolific production. The first heirlooms are always so welcome and we are excited to have them for you.
In addition, there is plenty of beautiful basil for you as well. For pesto, you may want to order our bunches of basil, but for use with your tomatoes, you should get plenty from our 2 ounce bags of basil.
How to store basil: Do not place in the refrigerator! Simply place in water in a jar on the counter if you get a live bunch. Just like flowers, make sure no leaves are actually directly in the water. If you buy the smaller quantity of leaves in a bag, simply leave out on your counter at room temperature, in the bag, folded over lightly and not sealed tightly.
We have quickly moved through our lisianthus. The hot weather last week caused prodigious, but fast blooming flowers. We have enough to place a stem or two in our regular bouquets and they are gorgeous in combination with our other flowers.
In addition, we have both Russian Red Garlic and Phillips Garlic hardneck garlic, and a selection of other herbs. We are also very pleased to be offering Freeman’s corn for our pickup/delivery service. This corn is often lauded as the best in the area. It’s the same corn sold at the intersection of Robinsonville and Plantation Rd.
Dittmar Family Farms brings us plenty of nice hybrid red tomatoes for those of you who prefer a traditional tomato. These are Big Beef, Celebrity and Early Girl and are some of the best tasting hybrids. They make excellent slicing tomatoes and salad tomatoes. They continue to harvest popular spaghetti squash and their whole free-range chickens and chicken liver are excellent.
From Totem Farms, we have red okra, plenty of herb selections, and a good assortment of microgreens to choose from. 302 Aquaponics has plenty of produce, herbs and tilapia fish.
AlaskaWild Seafoods family-run business has Pacific Cod, Pacific Rockfish, and Sockeye Salmon fresh frozen directly from the boat and flown to the east coast every week. Their smoked salmon is now back in stock.
Chapel’s Country Creamery brings us premium ground beef, as well as delicious aged and fresh cheese made on their farm using milk from their grass-fed cows.
King Mushrooms offers a large assortment of fresh mushrooms, including some difficult to find exotic varieties that have amazing health benefits.
Rounding out the line-up are wonderful free-range chicken eggs from Twin Posts and honey from Chrissy’s Bees (part of Stag Run Farm).
