Hotter in July
With apologies to Stevie Wonder, it is hotter in July. Yes, quite hot! But don’t let that deter you from getting your beautiful cut flowers and freshly harvested produce this week. Just remember to stay plenty hydrated with water, and especially when outside, wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
What’s Available This Week
The following will be available on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) located at Kings Highway across from Crooked Hammock Brewery, Thursday and Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hattie’s Garden located at 31341 Kendale Road in Lewes, and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the HLFM located at George H.P. Smith Park. If these times/dates do not work for you, please email Hattie to make other arrangements.
Hattie’s Garden Cut Flowers
Hattie’s Garden will feature Echo Lisianthus this week in all colors. In fact, we now have so many nice cut flowers we are able to make you any custom designed bouquet you wish either at the Garden on Thursday or Friday from 2 to 5, or at the HLFM farmers markets.
Besides our beautiful lisianthus, the following flowers are being offered in abundance — amazing Benary giant zinnias, spectacular gladiolus, and gorgeous gomphrena.
We also have plenty of beautiful fillers that include celosia and beautiful tall blue ageratum. All our cut flowers come with a packet of flower food and should last you a full week in a vase.
Hattie’s Garden Produce
Our cherry tomatoes are finally ripening in large number and are sweet and good. We “cull” our cherry tomatoes for imperfections and also wash them so you can munch on them right away!
We are also picking blackberries and the heat has made them very sweet!
The arugula looks plentiful this week and we are offering several types of bush beans, both regular sized and haricot vert and in various colors, including purple and wax beans.
Finally, we have a beautiful new planting of Hakurei turnips and because of this heat, we are harvesting them now while the greens and small roots are delightfully tender and sweet, either raw or lightly cooked!
Deep Grass Organic Produce
If you can come to the Garden on Thursday or Friday, we are able to offer some organically grown staples from Deep Grass Organic. This week we will have Yukon Gold potatoes, Red Potatoes, Shallots, Garlic, Cippolini and Onions.
Yours in the Garden & at the Markets,
