Heirloom Lettuce
Plants and Produce for Sale at Hattie’s Garden on Thurs, 10-5 & Sun 10-4; HLFM, Sat 8-12.
For a short time each spring, we offer delicious and unusual heirloom lettuce heads along with a couple very good newer varieties.
This week we will freshly harvest heads of Pirat, Black-seeded Simpson, Forellenschluss, Red Sails, Blushed Butter Oakleaf and Kagraner Sommer Butterhead.
Heirloom lettuce is never available from supermarkets and often not very common at farmers markets because the heads are fragile. We handle them with great care, placing them carefully in a large cooler with ice.
In addition, if you’d like to have a garden filled with heritage vegetables, we have the small plants for sale for you to place in your garden if you like! Lettuce is a fast grower, making it one of the most instantly gratifying crops. You can read all about them on our website under the plant section.
Plants for Sale
We are very excited to have our complete lineup of plants now. Every size of zinnia is ready, from 5 feet tall, to a nice little Profusion Bedding Zinnia that tops out just over a foot and never has to be dead-headed, blooming profusely all summer regardless of the conditions. We have Double Click Cosmos, Gomphrena (Globe Amaranth), as well as all of our French Marigolds.
Our herb selection this year is larger than ever, featuring a new Vietnamese Cilantro, French Tarragon, Tricolor Sage in addition to regular Barggarten Sage, Lemon Thyme as well as English Thyme, two types of Genovese Basil this week and lots more.
Now is also the time to get the first batch of your tomato plants. The plants are healthy and vigorous and range from heirloom to hybrid to cherry. Hot Peppers and lots of different kinds of sweet peppers are waiting for you and very nice looking eggplant plants, both Asian varieties and Italian varieties.
HLFM Opens this Saturday
We are excited to announce the 2017 Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) kicks off its 11th season on the grounds of the George H.P. Smith Park located at the corner of Dupont and Johnson Avenues.
For good parking and easy access, use Sussex Drive off of Savannah Road and park in one of the school parking lots. Follow the signs. You can enter directly into the market from the parking lot behind the school.
Hours run from 8 a.m. through 12 noon.
We hope to see you this week at Hattie’s Garden, located at 31341 Kendale Rd in Lewes on Thursday (10 to 5) or Sunday (10 to 4) or at the HLFM on Saturday. Although we bring as many plants as we possibly to the farmers market, the best selection will always be here at the garden. Nevertheless, if you come early to the market you should find everything you need.
Yours in the Garden, Greenhouse and the Market,
