Hattie’s Flowers
Flowers from Hattie’s Garden are very different from what you would get at garden centers and “big-box” stores.
When you first buy Hattie’s flowers, they normally may not be in bloom or even show the beginning of blossom buds. However, they will be green, healthy and ready to take off in your garden or to be planted in your containers. And they will perform magnificently.
Zinnias
Zinnias, a genus of plants of the sunflower tribe within the daisy family, are undemanding annuals that simply need full sun, warmth, and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Space taller varieties about 12 to 18 inches apart. Space shorter growing varieties about 6 to 8 inches apart. Height is indicated so you can plan your garden accordingly, being careful not to plant something taller in front of something shorter!
Benary Giant Zinnias
These are the standard for the professional cut-flower industry. Flowers are large dahlia-like doubles of about 3-4″ across. This year we will be growing Benary Giant Mix. Colors in the mix include yellow, orange, white, scarlet, rose, pink, deep red, lilac and purple. We will not be growing separate colors.
Pumila Mix Zinnia aka “Cut & Come Again”
Bright blooms in warm colors. This heirloom zinnia is also known as “Cut and Come Again.” Shortest of the cutting zinnias we grow, it will grow just to about 2 feet and is a better “fit” for many flower beds. They are a terrific, bright, fun variety … celebratory and colorful, not refined or stuffy. Grow this flower anywhere that is sunny and needs cheering up. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Double blooms are 21/2” to 3” wide.
Zahara Double Brilliant Mix
An easy-to-grow choice for cheerful color in the garden or pots. Bright and happy mix of hues in cherry, salmon, yellow, crimson, and white. Highly uniform plants with a low-growing, mounding habit flower continuously, providing weeks of color. Abundant, fully double blooms average 1 1/2–2 1/2″ wide. Zahara dwarf zinnias were bred for powdery mildew resistance and long-lasting color for landscapes and garden beds.
French Marigolds
Marigolds, a must-have for both vegetable and flower gardeners, are hardy annual plants and are great plants for cheering up any garden. Once planted, marigolds grow rapidly with no fuss.
Brocade Marigold Mix
This charming French marigold is an early and continuous bloomer bearing 2 in., bi-colored blossoms of gold and mahogany red. Just the right height for edging flowerbeds and borders. Easy to grow. Blooms early summer to frost. This is the beautiful and beneficial marigold that repels insects and nematodes, so plant it liberally throughout the garden. This has been very popular for us at Hattie’s Garden and grows prolifically, usually taller than 10 inches.
Court Jester Marigold
It’s easy to see where this fun little bloom gets its name! It’s worth making room for this “jester.” A French Marigold whose bright stripes of burgundy and yellow will keep you entertained into the fall. Many small single striped flowers dance atop a 20″ tall plant and make alluring additions to bouquets as well.
