Final Two Services
Hattie’s Garden will offer the final two delivery/pickup services for the season on Saturday, April 14 and Saturday, April 21 before we kick off our farmers market season at Historic Lewes Farmers Market (HLFM) on Saturday, May 5. We’ve been lucky to have such a wonderful array of freshly harvested produce and other authentic food from local farmers & vendors during the off-season.
This week Chesapeake Organic has plenty of produce and is able to offer nice bunches of spinach, green-leaf lettuce, and Bok Choy, in addition to many of the other items they are known for. Fresh Harvest supplies us with delicious hydroponically grown lettuce, and along with Black Hog, we’ve been blessed with mouth watering microgreens. As usual, order early for the best selection of this week’s produce lineup.
We are still receiving wonderful food from all of our other vendors and hope you take advantage of this service. This includes artisan cheese, farm-fresh chicken & duck eggs, free-range meat, Alaska-wild seafood, jams n’ jellies, fresh mushrooms, fresh gourmet food, and herbal remedies. All deliveries to Rehoboth and Lewes are still only $5.00.
Remember the deadline for ordering is Wednesday at noon. We advise you to please place your orders, especially if you are going to want produce, as soon as possible.
Meat, Seafood & Eggs During Regular Season
Do you want meat, seafood or eggs available at Hattie’s Garden during the regular season? Hattie’s Garden is surveying our customer base to see if there is any demand for Bohemia Lea meat and AlaskaWild seafood, as well as fresh Twin Post eggs, during the regular season.
We can keep these things in stock for you throughout the summer if you like. Please send us an email to let us know if this would be of interest to you. Our business hours during the season will vary, but requests could also be made via email with an open-ended self-serve pickup time that is convenient for you.
Plants Plants Plants
For the home gardener, Hattie’s Garden will also be open for plant sales on Thursday and Friday from 2 to 5 and on Saturday from 10-3. Those hours will expand as the weather warms. Currently, our available plants include:
- Mixed Lettuce — Grow your own salad mix with the ‘Cut-and-Come-Again’ Allstar Gourmet Lettuce Mix which includes green oakleaf, red oakleaf, green romaine, red romaine, lollo rossa, and red leaf lettuce.
- Head Lettuce — Several varieties available. See website for details.
- Arugula — Lovely Six-Packs.
- Swiss Chard — Delicious Fordhook and stunning Bright Lights are ready.
- Nasturtium — Flowers (and leaves) are edible and taste similar to watercress, add them to salad for a punch of color.
- Bouquet Dill — Delightful herb with many culinary uses.
- Calypso Cilantro — Excellent eating quality and lots of leaves on this variety.
- Flat Italian Parsley — Flat ‘Gigante d’Italia’ are vigorous growers and have very big, deep green shiny leaves with an exceptionally mellow and sweet fuller flavor than standard plain parsley.
About Our Six-Packs
A word about our small Six-packs plant plugs (starts). We plant several seeds in each “cell” of our six packs for cilantro, dill, parsley, arugula and mixed lettuce. These small, extremely viable plants will take off for you in your garden and give you very nice harvests in a small space and can be harvested at a tender age AND allowed to regrow.
Our head lettuce is planted one lettuce plant per cell which include a range of hard to find gourmet lettuce, many of which are heirlooms. They are available only once a year in the spring when they will grow well for you. As summer approaches and the weather turns hot, we suggest growing the mixed lettuce plugs to a young age to avoid bitter lettuce.
Planting
If you are unsure how to plant these, please ask us at the plant sale. Most of them can simply be put in nice fertile soil about five or six inches apart, or in pots a little more closely. Head lettuce should get a bit more space (8-10″) unless you plan to harvest them small. This is how we plant them at Hattie’s Garden and they will give you a lot of bang for your buck.
Gardening Class Opening
Due to an emergency cancellation, we have a spot open in our gardening class to be held Sunday, April 15 and Sunday, April 22 from 2 to 5.
Please email Hattie directly if you are interested.
Yours, in the Garden,
