What’s New at Hattie’s Garden
At the request of several customers, we are now stocking organic dried beans and organic raw nuts!
Since my move here in 2004, I have found it difficult to find good, fresh organic dried beans and nuts in our area. The nuts are invariably rancid or unattainable and the organic dried beans are scarce and often very old from sitting on the shelf too long. There is nothing like fresh product. Old beans don’t cook up well and rancid nuts are just plain awful, causing me gastrointestinal distress.
We are beginning with a relatively small selection of a dozen items including walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, adzuki beans, French green lentils, kidney beans, cannellini beans, pinto beans and navy pea beans. We welcome any suggestions for other things you would like us to carry. The following items come to mind: California organic rice (less arsenic), organic oatmeal, organic quinoa, organic barley or buckwheat, spelt or rye? Please let us know and let us know what other types of dried beans and nuts you would like to see.
Hattie’s 2024 CSA
The CSA for 2024 is open for sign up. Our CSA allows you to purchase an amount of credit toward everything Hattie’s Garden grows. This includes vegetable transplants, herbs, cutting flower plants, bedding plants, as well as our produce and flower bouquets we sell during the season. For purchasing ahead of time, you will receive a 10% discount.
You can start redeeming your CSA credits beginning with the growing season in May. These credits do not expire. The deadline for sign up and payment is March 1. You can read more about the CSA program here. Thank you for participating in our program.
What’s Available This Week
The following items are available now to order for pickup or delivery on Saturday, February 17. You can stop by on Tuesday from 12 to 3 and Saturday from 9 to 2 for most everything, though placing an online order will ensure it will be available for Saturday pickup or delivery.
Hattie’s Garden has a nice selection of healthy microgreens for you this week. Our beans and nuts won’t be available until Saturday, but we will have some type of garden green for you Tuesday as we harvest small amounts of Dwarf Siberian Kale, Mizuna Mustard Greens and Swiss Chard. Our young carrots will be available only at the Garden as we begin to run out, but you can purchase Dittmar’s nice sweet bigger carrots from the order form. So stop by on Tuesday or Saturday.
Dittmar Family Farms is supplying us with plenty of full-sized sweet carrots and delicious leeks. Dittmar also raises Belted Galloway. This exquisite artisan beef is unlike any conventionally raised beef you will find in the supermarket. Known for a much leaner, yet nicely marbled meat, “Belties” averages 46% lower in calories, 70% lower in fat and saturated fat, 57% lower in cholesterol and 19% higher in protein than comparable beef breeds, including Angus. We will get more beef from Dittmar toward the end of February.
Enoch Farms has sustainably raised, naturally grown, heritage pork. They provide us with a nice assortment of products, including plenty of specialty sausages, scrapple and porkchops.
AlaskaWild provides us with some of the best wild fish available, directly from a family business based in Clam Gulch, Alaska. We carry whatever is in season and at present have salmon in the following varieties: Coho, Sockeye, Smoked Black-pepper, Smoked Cajun and of course, traditional. We also have Alaska Cod back in stock. This fish is flash-frozen and gets rave reviews from our customers.
Davidson Exotics brings us freshly grown organic certified mushrooms each week. We carry Cremini, Portabella, Shiitake, Maiitake, Grey Oyster, Lion’s Mane and King Oyster mushrooms to the list. In addition, we carry their mushroom umami and wild mushroom umami seasonings with or without salt, their mushroom salts, dried mushroom wild rice soups, instant organic free trade coffee with a blend of dried mushrooms, and a big selection of mushrooms powders. The mushroom powders are made from 100% fruiting bodies containing absolutely no filler. All products are certified organic.
From Twin Posts, we have wonderful free-range chicken eggs.
Gaia Coffee Co. brings us specialty Costa Rican coffee that is craft-roasted in small batches to guarantee a beautiful, consistent roast every time. You can purchase them whole bean or ground. We have five blends to choose from.
- Slower Lower Blend — blend of Colombian, Brazil and Costa Rican beans. This is medium-dark roast with notes of toffee, semi-sweet chocolate with a full bodied finish. Perfect for any occasion.
- Farmers Market Blend — a beautiful blend of Central American coffees roasted on the darker side for a full bodied cup with notes of toffee, semi-sweet chocolate and a rich finish on the palate.
- Aquiares CentroAmericano — full-bodied, medium roast exotic coffee with hints of cacao, oranges & almonds.
- Colombia Palmera Decaf — this coffee is a blend of multiple regions in Colombia. Has hints of cinnamon, caramel and citrus notes.
- Nasa Blend — a classic, consistent, and smooth coffee. Has hints of molasses & chocolate notes.
From Chrissy Bee’s, a division of Stag Run Farm, we have wildflower raw honey and raw honeycomb.
Chapel’s Country Creamery makes some of the nicest cheese we have ever had. Their on-farm cheese-making operation is one of the first of its kind in Maryland. We love their Brie, Cheddars and Bay Blue, as well as their fresh cheese. And we are particularly fond of their alpine style Woodbine cheese, which has the perfect balance of savory and sweet flavors.
Backyard Jams & Jellies has many choices this year. If you are looking for some great jams, chutneys, or jellies for the holiday season, please take a look at the selections we have. For more choices, stop by the Garden on Tuesday or Saturday.
