December Weather
Such interesting weather for late December!
On the one hand, the strange weather gives many of us farmer-types cause for concern, on the other hand, what a difference a year makes.
Last year at this time, it had been so cold in November 2014, that the locally grown produce was scarce during our “off-season”. This year, we are pleased to be enjoying an abundance of produce, even as we enter winter. We hope to bring you plenty of great things throughout the month of January, helping you to solidify your New Year’s resolutions to eat healthily and to eat locally!
Remember this special holiday delivery / pickup service is for Wednesday, December 30 and the deadline for placing your order is Sunday, December 27 at noon.
Some produce of note this week include the mildly flavored heirloom, Long Red Cincinnati Market Radish from Mossflower Cottage Garden. This long scarlet radish is described in Vilmorin: The Vegetable Garden (1885). It is also known as ‘Long Scarlet’ radish.
Mossflower is also featuring a new kale for me called Olympic Red Kale. Very nice leaves similar in color to Red Russian Kale with a little more frill and every bit as sweet and good. Gardeners and farmers will like this open-pollinated variety for overwintering as it is reportedly very cold-hardy.
Deep Grass Organic has Purple Top Turnips with greens and Yellow Turnips with greens. In my humble opinion, turnips are under appreciated. A perfect winter root crop, both the root and the greens are low in calorie and nutrient rich. The roots carry lots of Vitamin C, potassium, B-6, folate, and even copper. Eat the leafy greens for an amazing array of nutrients.
In the prepared foods department, if you haven’t tried Patty’s Ginger & Carrot Bisque you will be very pleasantly surprised and a must have for the holidays is a dessert pie from Jen. Oh how good they are! Hattie’s Chocolate Chili is also a wonderful holiday treat.
Finally, a note about our mushroom availability. The delivery day to us for Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms is Thursday, December 31. Please order mushrooms as usual if you like, but plan to pick them up at the Garden on Thursday after 12 noon. Although regular orders will all be ready on Wednesday for pickup or delivery, you may certainly wait and pickup your entire order Thursday if you like. We will be here.
As always, order early. Some items will always be limited. As a reminder, beginning with this coming holiday service for Wednesday, December 30, we are offering a revised delivery charge of $5.00 for orders $25.00 or less that are going within the city of Lewes.
Deadline for this order is Sunday, December 27 at noon.
Best wishes for a wonderful holiday and happy new year!
Yours in the Garden,
