Cooler Weather Crops
We are pleased to be harvesting some of our cooler weather crops including Hakurei Turnips, scrumptious Radishes and young Early Hanover Kale. We are also harvesting some of our young Ginger for purchase at the Garden.
Yes, we know it isn’t cool, but we have nurtured and watered, and with a few cool nights and somewhat less intense heat, we are pleased to bring beautiful vegetables to you this week.
So stop by Hattie’s Garden on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 5. If these times/dates do not work for you, please email Hattie to make other arrangements.
And of course we will be at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market located at George H.P. Smith Park on Saturday from 8 to 12.
What’s Available This Week
Our young Early Hanover Kale has a very tender leaf and customers were extremely delighted with it in the spring. We hope you enjoy it. We cut the leaves and wash, bag and chill them immediately so they stay sweet and good for you for a long time.
The Hakurei Turnips are looking great, with their tasty and “hairless” greens and our radishes are in pink, red, also with beautiful greens. (Yes, you can and should eat radish greens! They make a peppery addition to salads or can be used in cooking as you would any green, remembering they are very tender and cook quickly.)
In addition to our leafy greens, including arugula, we are harvesting more of our precious young fresh ginger this week. It is likely this will only be available at the Garden. The demand is high and we have just one “trial” row in our high tunnel this year. We are certainly pleased with the trial and will be sure to up the production for our next season.
Oh, I almost forgot! We have tomatoes! Our late planting is putting on an amazing performance. Plenty of small slicing ‘Early Girls‘ and a few nice heirlooms accompany our delicious cherry tomato mixes this week. We will also harvest green tomatoes this week for those of you who enjoy fried green tomatoes or wish to make green tomato relish, etc.
Our flower harvest will include some of our “second” flush of lisianthus that are putting on a much better show than usual since they have absolutely loved the heat, along with gomphrena and tall blue ageratum and whatever else Hattie can find to make beautiful bouquets for you this week. Each bouquet comes with a packet of flower food. These bouquets should last at least a full week for you as we cut and condition them professionally.
For all of us at Hattie’s Garden, the Harvest Moon really is a harbinger of bounty!
Deep Grass Organic Produce
If you can come to the Garden on Wednesday or Thursday, we are able to offer some organically grown staples from Deep Grass Organic. This week we will have Yukon Gold potatoes, Red Bliss Potatoes, large Garlic heads, Red Onions, and Candy Yellow Onions.
Yours in the Garden and at the Market,
