Did you know European folk traditions connect Saint Valentine with the beginning of spring? According to tradition in Slovenia, Saint Valentine or Zdravko was one of the saints of spring, the saint of good health and the patron of beekeepers and pilgrims. A proverb says that St Valentine “brings the keys of roots”, with plants and flowers starting to grow on this day. Only recently has St. Valentine’s Day been celebrated as a day of love.

For Hattie’s Garden, there is no conflict between these two traditions. Both traditions are important to us and Valentine’s Day is a good day to remember to extend the hand of friendship and the focus on love and friendship (and spring) helps us to remember the many things for which we are grateful.

Hattie’s Garden is happy to continue our delivery / pickup service and we want to thank our customers for their support this winter. The winter has been kind and we are fortunate to still have plenty of good, healthy food available for you each week.

Black Hog Farmstead has plenty of duck eggs as the ducks begin to respond to the increased light of the coming spring. Duck eggs are nutrient dense and contain the type of mono-saturated fat we need in our diet. Try a beautiful Duck Egg Omelette for breakfast or for the more adventurous, create a wonderful quiche, perhaps including some Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms! And you can include some of Chapel’s cheese — all reduced in price this week.

Plant CSA

As you begin to plan your garden, consider joining our Plant CSA at Hattie’s Garden. You will receive any amount of credit you wish to purchase at a 10% discount.

This is also your opportunity to request specific varieties so we are sure to have what you want when you want it. Plants become available beginning sometime in April, throughout the month of May and into June.

We thank those of you who have already signed up as the CSA model helps us to purchase needed inputs for the season. Deadline for CSA participation is March 1. Payment is appreciated at your earliest convenience and secures your credits.
