24 Days to Spring
Spring is coming soon and we are beginning to see our little seedlings sprout. Our tomato seedlings will soon be as large as the ones pictured on the left. We are very optimistic about the coming season.
I’ve been planting parsley seed this week and nurturing them in the house under our lights where they can germinate in a week or two.
Soon the weather will change and soils will warm and the growing season will be upon us. I always look forward to the opening of the earth and the beginning of new life.
However, in the meantime, the polar air continues to chill us to the bone. But this too shall pass.
Orders for February 28
The deadline for ordering is Wednesday at noon. Our next service will not be until March 14. The only day above freezing this week is also Wednesday, and we will order the produce for everyone Wednesday morning, prior to our actual deadline, so please try to order as soon as you can if you would like produce items (although we do order extra items).
For this week, we have run out of some produce items, but still have some Hakurei turnips in nice bunches from Hattie’s Garden.
Deep Grass still has mixed red and green curly kale, as well as spinach leaves in large bags.
Remember you can submit an additional order if you are not ready to complete your entire order, but want to make sure you order in time the items you want, while it’s still available. When you do submit another order form with additional items for the same week, it is helpful if you’ll mention it is as an addition by using the comment box.
Don’t forget your cheese, your eggs, your meat, and some wonderfully prepared baked goods and gourmet items.
The jams and jellies from Backyard Jams & Jellies and Deep Grass have nothing but simple, real ingredients in them, including real fruit and real sugar.
We’ve also got honey, honey soap, honey and lip balm from Baues’ Busy Bees. The lip balm in tins, contains olive oil, bees wax and honey (nothing you can’t pronounce) and is also great for using under the eye as a cream.
Plant CSA
If you are thinking of purchasing plants from Hattie’s Garden this year, you may be interested in our Plant CSA. Full information is on our website and any credits you buy will come at a 10% discount on plants.
The CSA concept gives farmers much needed upfront funds to purchase expensive inputs at a time of year when inputs are critical to success and funds are characteristically low. Hattie’s Garden grows healthy and robust vegetable, herb and flower plants, especially cutting flowers and heirloom tomato plants.
And Thanks
Small local farmers are supported by the community that surrounds them. All the vendors involved with Hattie’s Garden Delivery / Pickup service are very grateful to our customers for helping us through the winter months and look forward to the coming growing season.
We will continue to operate our delivery/pickup service as often as possible as we move into the spring, but you can expect service to occur primarily on a bi-weekly basis throughout March and April as we approach the opening of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market on Mother’s Day weekend.
Thank you for your continued support of your local vendors and our local economy. It is important.
Yours in the high tunnel and the potting shed,
